Natuna - the owner of the Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, was shocked by the surge in postpaid electricity bills amid the Corona virus pandemic (Covid-19). This bill suddenly rose since the beginning of May 2020.

Residents began to complain about these conditions. Higher electricity bills are become a hot topic in social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp groups. The community considered that PLN has raised the electricity bills without initial notice.

From Batamnews, one Facebook account named Mujarab, wrote a comment in one of the posts that the reason for the surge in PLN bills was not fundamental and detrimental to the public.

"Every month I usually pay Rp. 80,000 for electricity, but this month it increased to Rp. 600,000. If I calculated as used, it’s illogical," he wrote, commenting on a citizen post that also complained about the surge in PLN bills.

Responding to that, PLN Natuna Manager, Abdul Munir explained that there has been no increment in PLN payment rates to date, specifically for postpaid meters. He said, the rate in Natuna applies the same as other regions in Indonesia.

"During March we are facing the Covid-19 pandemic, and are urged to remain at home and not go out, so there is a possibility that the use of electric increases. It cannot be just a surge that is billed according to these factors," Munir said.

Thus, he appealed to the public who received complaints related to the electricity bill to immediately report it to the PLN Service Office, by bringing the last meter stand photo, to be checked and matched data on each meter.
