Jakarta, Batamnews - The Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) has stopped the theft of fish by the Vietnamese-flagged foreign fishing vessel (KIA) in the Natuna waters.

Marine Operations Director of Bakamla, Laksamana Suwito, said the Vietnamese-flagged vessel was indeed about to launch its action to dredge fish in Natuna waters, which is the jurisdiction of Indonesia.

"KN. Dana Island - 323 Bakamla RI succeeded in thwarting the suspicious actions of foreign fishing vessels (KIA) from Vietnam," said Suwito in a written statement, Sunday (4/3/2021).

In the initial examination, Suwito said that his party had found several pieces of evidence of fish theft by a Vietnamese vessel with hull number BD 311xx-TS.

The vessel, he said, had just sailed from Vietnam to Indonesian waters to search for fish. The fishing catch is known to be 25 kg and the vessel's hold is filled with chunks of ice.

Suwito detailed the chronology of the theft and securing process of the vessel by his party. He said at around 23.00, KN. Pulau Dana - 323, which is conducting patrol Operation Nusa V Guard 2021 in the border area of Indonesia - Malaysia in the West sector, detected a vessel on the radar.

"The vessel is positioned at 8 nautical miles (NM) within the boundary of the continental shelf, and is traveling at a speed of 1.5 knots," said Suwito.

Furthermore, he said, to ensure the vessel's activity, the KN Commander. Pulau Dana - 323 who was on duty at the time, Lt. Col. Bakamla Hananto Widhi, ordered a close contact.

"But when approached, the vessel turned off the vessel's lights and tried to escape by increasing the speed of up to seven knots," he said.

After finding the vessel trying to escape, the vessel commander said Suwito immediately ordered the Visit Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) Team to approach using RHIB.

However, the target, the Vietnamese-flagged vessel, remains uncooperative and continues to try to escape. The chase was then carried out, even Bakamla had also tried to fire warning shots that were fired into the air.
