Confiscated for 4 Months in Batam, Two Foreign Tankers were Finally Released

Batam, Batamnews - Two tankers with Iranian and Panamanian flags previously secured by Bakamla RI were finally released. The two ships were escorted out of Indonesian waters.

Previously, the skippers of MT Freya and MT Horse tanker underwent a trial at the Batam District Court.

The verdict of the Batam District Court trial on Tuesday (25/5/2021) stated that the MT Horse (Iran) skipper, Mehdi Monghasemjahroni, and MT Freya (Panama) skipper Chen Yi Qun was found guilty.

Although the two skippers were sentenced to one year in prison, they were given a two-year probation period. They are also not detained with the option of committing similar offenses during probation to be prosecuted according to the rules of detention.

MT Freya was fined Rp. 2 billion, the article was proven to have spilled oil into the sea which could damage the environment. The verdict was accepted by the two skippers.

The two skippers were eventually deported. The Batam Immigration Office issued a warrant for the escort and transfer of the two Iranian and Chinese foreigners.

Head of Public Relations and Protocol of Bakamla, Colonel (Bakamla) Wisnu Pramandita said, on Friday (28/5/2021) at 15.30 WIB, Bakamla RI, led by Captain Ilham, also escorted the two skippers to the MT Horse and MT Freya ships.

"The process of escorting and transferring uses departing from the 99 Batam pier," said Wisnu, Sunday (29/5/2021).

Onboard the ship belonging to Bakamla KNP 330, a passport from Batam immigration was carried out to each of the MT Horse and MT Freya skippers, witnessed by representatives from Bakamla RI, the Attorney General's Office, and KPLP.

The two ships immediately moved out of the waters of Batu Ampar, Batam, and were monitored out of Indonesian territory.

"This ensures that they get out of Indonesian waters," concluded Wisnu.
