Batam - The surge of the Covid-19 case in Batam has started to worry. Daily, additional cases reached two digits. At its peak on August 28, 2020, there were 54 patients in one day.

Head of Public Health Sector of Batam COVID-19 Task Force Team, Didi Kusmarjadi said a significant increase in Covid-19 cases was allegedly due to the mutation of the D614G coronavirus, also called the G mutation.

"It is suspected that the case in Batam is a type G virus, in general Indonesia is the same," said Didi, Thursday (10/9/2020).

Quoted from Tirto, the G mutation was a variation of the original strain of the coronavirus which was first reported in the city of Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since it was discovered, the virus has mutated several times.

Some studies have also shown that patients infected with the D614G virus carry more copies of the virus than those infected with the D614 strain, which may explain why the virus is more easily transmitted.

"The current information is that 60 percent of Covid-19 cases indicate type G and the rest are type D," he said.

However, for the case of the spread of Covid-19 in Batam, Didi was convinced that the community had begun to disobey health protocols, starting from wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining distance.

"The increase in cases recently is due to non-compliance with health protocols," he explained.

Currently, people tended to ignore health protocols, especially when there were events with a large capacity of people. On the sidelines of these activities, Covid-19 began to spread. "Such as during meals together, social events and others," he said.

Therefore, Didi reminded again, that the community should obey the health protocols.
