Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, revealed findings regarding mysterious kidney failure cases affecting children. He found that pediatric patients with acute kidney failure were detected to have three dangerous substances.

"The Ministry of Health has investigated that under-five patients affected by AKI (Acute Kidney Injury) were detected to have 3 hazardous chemicals (ethylene glycol-EG, diethylene glycol-DEG, ethylene glycol butyl ether-EGBE)," said the Minister of Health in a written statement received by detik.com, Thursday (20/10/2022).

The syrup withdrawal was carried out because some of them were confirmed to have EG, DEG, and EGBE, which should not exist or have very small levels.

"Considering that the number of toddlers identified with KAI has reached 70 per month (the reality must be more than this), with a fatality/death rate approaching 50 percent," said the Minister of Health.

Previously, 206 children were reported to have mysterious acute kidney failure, based on data collected until Tuesday (18/10/2022). Of this total, 99 of them died.
