PSDKP Arrests 2 Vietnamese Fishing Vessels for Stealing Fish in Natuna Waters

Batam, Batamnews - Fishing vessels from Vietnam were arrested by personnel of the Directorate General of Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision (PSDKP), Tuesday (17/8/2021).

Two vessels were secured, while one sunk. The sunken vessel was allegedly tasked with transporting catches in and out of the Indonesia-Vietnam maritime territory. They operate illegally in Indonesian EEZ waters.

The Director-General of PSDKP, Admiral TNI Adin Nurawaluddin, said the arrest position was in the WPP-NRI 711 area, North Natuna Sea.

"Based on monitoring through AIS and satellite radar, it was then validated that two vessels were carrying out illegal fishing," said Adin at the Batam PSDKP port, Riau Islands, Friday (20/8/2021).

Two Vietnamese vessels were secured, namely TNKG 1843 TS and KG 1938 TS. During the arrest process, Adin said it was following the procedure.

However, during the pursuit in the WPP-71 area west of the Natuna Sea, which is far from the Vietnamese continental shelf, conducted termination and inspection.

"But in the process of traveling, one vessel overheated and generated heat in the engine, smoke appeared and caught fire and sank," he explained.

Based on humanity, PSDKP officers carried out the rescue of the crew (ABK). The total number of crew members who were arrested was 22 people.

"The sunken vessel is a transport vessel that goes back and forth transporting the stolen fish to Vietnam," he said.

From the arrests of the two vessels, Adin said the evidence that was secured amounted to 1 ton. After that, further examination will be carried out.
