May Day Protests in Batam: Workers and Online Motorcycle Taxis Unite to Demand Rights and Reforms

Batam, Batamnews - On the commemoration of International Labor Day or May Day, thousands of workers in Batam City staged a protest at the Mayor's Office and the local DPRD.

The action began at around 11:20 AM local time. The protesters carried various attributes such as cars with complete sound systems and union flags while delivering speeches through loudspeakers.

Not only workers, but dozens of online motorcycle taxis also joined the action to voice their rights.

Meanwhile, several security officers from the TNI/Police and Satpol PP were on guard around the location of the action. The gates of the Batam Mayor's Office and Batam DPRD were closed. The situation inside the office was deserted.

The demands from the workers varied, covering issues such as the Omnibus Law, the Health Bill, the Domestic Workers Bill, and the problems of clean water and electricity in Batam.

In addition, the workers also raised the issue of the parliamentary threshold or the 4 percent parliamentary limit stipulated in Law No. 7 of 2017 articles 414 and 415.

The action staged by the workers in Batam became a portrait of their struggle in fighting for their rights and interests in the world of work.
